autoVHC recently returned from Automechanika Frankfurt, the world’s biggest automotive aftermarket show in the world. It is held every two years and this year celebrated its 25th show, with five action-packed trade fair days which concluded on September 15th.

August is typically a slow month for new car registrations, but the release of the latest SMMT figures, we can see that the number of new cars registered last month was 94,094 – a hefty 23.1% rise on the same month last year. Good news for dealerships.

2017 was without any doubt a challenging year for the new car market, with several factors having a negative impact on sales. A radical overhaul of the UK’s system for taxing cars, known as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), came into effect at the beginning of April last year, making many new cars significantly more expensive to tax in year one. The knock-on effect was striking, as new car sales in the UK immediately plummeted by 20%.
